This is what you listened to in the 90s if you were too cool for Nirvana (I swear there's a VW Passat song in here, bear with me, Oppo)

You see, Oppo. Long ago, in the 1990s, there was grunge and bands like Nirvana. But some of us we’re too cool for that crap. Smashing Pumpkins? Stone Temple Pilots? Please.

That’s where Pavement comes in. The quintessential college rock band. Bullshit lyrics? Check. Painful screeching guitars? Check. Lead singer who shouts said bullshit lyrics against screeching guitars? Double check. This is what it meant to be cool in the 90s, and don’t let anyone tell you different.

This song is about Passats, I swear, it really is.

A whiter shade of trash on a redder shade of neck:

It was your distant voice:

Congratulations, Oppo. If you’ve listened through all of these, you’re officially 90s cool.

That’s the way to Passat, babe. And that’s the car to his soul.

I was 90's cool, before it was cool to be 90's cool. That is why I have switched to 2000's cool and am just jamming to a bunch of Weezer.

Never listened to Pavement and never liked Nirvana. And the Pumpkins... Jesus, Billy Corgan is possibly the most annoying person in music history. Well, maybe second to Yoko. Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam did it for me. I don’t get why people like music with unintelligible lyrics and sloppy playing.

The 90's were just kind of a write off for me - 10 years of Hootie and the Blowfish... Listened to old hair bands and euro electronica instead...

You get a star for hating on Billy Corgan.

But I cannot endorse Pavement as unintelligible. “There’s no women in Alaska, there’s no coast of Nebraska” is intelligible, but really, really fucking dumb (but still great)

Nice. By unintelligible, I mean shouty or screamy. They might be great lines, but who gives a shit if you can’t understand it? Beck, Weezer, and Cake have completely pointless but nonetheless fun lines, and I can at least understand them without reading the liner notes.

I love Pavement. I’ve seen them play maybe five times; twice in the same day once! That second show of the day was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. They played every song they knew and a few that they didn’t; some even falling apart halfway through. It was pure bliss. A year or two later, on their final tour before they broke up, I got to hang out with them for a bit. They said of all the shows they played, that particular show was their favorite.

I always found Pavement unbearable. The grating voice combined with unnecessarily complex bass lines and chord progression always reminds me of early Meat Puppets mixed with novelty acts like Ass Ponys and blended into proto-hipster indie rock bullshit.

Their fans were even worse. Pretentious shitnuggets who looked down their noses at people who genuinely loved all the good music that was coming out at the time. They were worse than Sonic Youth fans. You were never “too cool” for Nirvana. You were purposefully listening to bad music because most people didn’t like it. Congratulations. You had all the musical depth of all the grungy teenagers you were mocking.

All the cool, smart kids I knew in the 90s were listening to Stereolab and Radiohead.

Nirvana was better at being the Pixies than the Pixies ever were.

Commercial Success doesnt always mean the music is crap - Melon Collie is evidence of that.

Modest Mouse is what Pavement could have been if they were focused on writing good songs and not being contrarian shitfucks.

They made a good example from he era. Those are bands that I like between 1-5 songs from and that’s it, and I could identify them. Weird but fun, though I never bought their albums. I couldn’t ID any Pavement song (can’t watch the above vids right now).

I was hoping that this band was going to be left in the 90s where it belongs. Not my bag of chips brother. Kudos to you for liking them. And for the record, I like Blur and hate nirvana.
